Step-by-Step
Guide
1. Selecting
a Substance:
- Choose a compound from the drop-down list ("Select a
substance").
- The chemical formula and formula weight will appear in the two
gray text fields located on the right side.
- If applicable, the density of the compound for different
concentrations will be retrieved from the database.
2. Input
Concentration Data:
- In the "Concentration" frame, input values for molarity (M),
molality (m), mole fraction (x), weight percent (w/w%),
weight-volume percent (w/v%), or density (g/mL).
- Only the relevant fields need to be filled for the desired
calculation.
- The density field may be automatically populated based on the
database, but users can manually adjust this if needed.
3. Input
Amount Data:
- In the "Amount" frame, input values such as volume of the
solution (in mL), mass of the solution (in grams), or number of
moles (n).
- For mass-related calculations, the mass of solute can be
input, and the solution's volume or total mass can be computed
accordingly.
4. Performing
the Calculation:
- As you enter values, the "Calculation status" frame will
indicate the status. A successful calculation will show
"Calculation status: OK".
- If an error occurs (e.g., entering a non-numerical value), the
status will display "Calculation status: ILLEGAL NUMBER".
5. Generating
Solution Preparation Procedures:
- The "Solution preparation procedure" frame will automatically
generate instructions for preparing solutions by both volume
(flask method) and by mass (weighing method).
- This is helpful when you need to make precise solutions using
different approaches.
6. Dilution
Calculations:
- To perform dilutions, enter the desired final concentration
and the stock concentration (available in molarity, molality,
w/w%, w/v%, or mole fraction) in the "Stock concentration"
frame.
- The "Dilution - Solution preparation procedure" frame will
provide step-by-step instructions for how to dilute the stock
solution.
7. Density
Data Management:
- The "Density data" button allows users to view, edit, save, or
add new density data and compounds to the database.
- This feature is essential for compounds not included in the
default database or for custom solutions.
8. Saving
and Managing Comments:
- In the "Comments etc." frame, you can enter notes about the
calculations. The "Erase Text" button clears this field.
- You can assign a name to the comments in the "Name-comment"
field, and save the name to the list box using the "Before",
"After", "Replace", and "Delete" buttons for managing saved
comments.
9. Copy
Calculation to Clipboard:
- The "Copy calculation to clipboard" button enables you to copy
all the input and output data from the text fields as a single
string for easy sharing or record-keeping.
